Dr. Stepen M. Estner - Chiropractor

Few people realize at the onset of lower back pain that their sleeping habits could be causing the problem. It is very easy to blame lifting or improper movements, but many of us sleep in positions that are less than beneficial to our spines.

The spine has 3 areas that are meant to be curved; the neck or cervical spine, the middle or thoracic spine, and the lower-back or lumbar spine. When we sleep in certain positions, or if we have excess weight, we are compromising one or more areas of the spine – which can and does create back pain. Some of the best remedies for back pain caused by improper sleep positions is to use pillows for support and sleep in the best possible positions to relieve any excess pressure or strain on your spine.

As a basic guide, the alterations below should help in each category. If symptoms persist however, make sure that you visit a RI Chiropractor for a full examination to rule out more serious spinal issues.

Side Sleepers – Place a pillow between your knees to avoid twisting the lower back when the upper leg/knee slides forward onto the mattress during sleep.

Back Sleepers – Place a pillow or a towel under the backs of your knees. The support in this area will help preserve the curve of your lower back and keep pressure off the sciatic nerve.

Stomach Sleepers – If at all possible, this position should be avoided as it causes a great deal of strain on the back. If this is the only position you can sleep in however, place a pillow beneath your abdomen and pelvic area to reduce some of the strain.

Whether you have a personal injury, chronic back and neck pain, or would simply like to maintain your overall health, Estner Chiropractic in RI can help…

Perhaps it is a little known fact, but as a holistic form of medicine that does not use prescription medication to treat patients, chiropractic care is completely safe for all ages. In particular this approach offers an alternative to treating common ailments in children with costly and sometimes dangerous drugs. The article below highlights some of the positive impact this trend is having on parents and the chiropractic community.

Parents Turn To Chiropractors To Treat Colic, Reflux
by Jaclyn Allen

Some parents are turning to chiropractors to treat their infants and children for ailments ranging from colic to earaches.

When Alisha Bauer’s daughter, Avery, was suffering from severe reflux, Bauer said she didn’t get the answers she wanted from doctors.

“Avery had been spitting up a lot,” said Bauer. “It was to the point that we even wondered if she was getting enough to eat. They just kept saying, ‘She’ll grow out of it. It’s fine.’ And I’m like, ‘No. It isn’t.”

So Bauer’s mother suggested that she try a chiropractor.

Avery was 5-months-old when she got her first adjustment.

Chiropractors we talked to said they are seeing more parents like Bauer looking for help with everything from reflux to colic to earaches.

“Chiropractic is not a treatment for disease,” said Dr. Kristina Ring with Botha Chiropractic in Denver. “However, when the baby’s body begins to function better, we do see improvements in those.”

Ring has checked out children for seven years, but lately, she said, pediatricians have even started referring patients.

She said the treatment is nothing like the back-cracking, bone-popping image people might have of chiropractic care.

“The amount of pressure to adjust an infant spine is about the same amount as on a ripe tomato without piercing the skin. It’s very, very gentle,” said Ring.

She said it is effective, though, and pointed to a 2009 study funded by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association of hundreds of children in chiropractic care.

“They found the only adverse affect was mild discomfort,” said Ring. “The majority of doctors and parents reported the kids were sleeping better, better behavior and improved immune function.”

However, many doctors are still wary.

“I think with infants there is particular reason to be cautious,” said Dr. Steve Federico, president of the Colorado chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. “There’s very little research that has been done with infants relative to chiropractors.”

He said, in general, children under 2 years of age are particularly at risk of injury, and that if he had an infant, he would not take the child to a chiropractor.

“I think that I would be concerned about the lack of evidence to support the care for pediatric patients in this area,” said Federico.

But parents such as Bauer said as long as chiropractic care seems to work when mainstream medicine falls short they believe opinions about it will continue to “adjust.”

“This week, I’ve seen a significant improvement,” said Bauer. “So many kids are medicated that don’t need to be, so it’s great to be able to think about other options.”

Other than an auto accident, work injury or sports injury, there are several other ways that back injury and back pain can occur. According to WebMD being overweight is one currently widespread precursor to chronic back pain.

The overweight body needs to work much harder in all areas to maintain erect posture and spinal health, with added weight putting an unnecessary strain on the spine and back muscles. This one factor alone can cause untold levels of neck and back pain, however is not the sole reason or source for back pain.

Some other ways that back pain may be created or aggravated include:

High heel shoes
Poor posture habits
An old or low quality mattress
Congenital conditions that involve the spine
Old age
Injury

The combinations of some of these factors are more demanding than others. For instance, if you are approaching old age and have always had poor posture habits, you will be much more likely to experience back pain as you age. Likewise, if you were born with or developed a disease of the spine and then endured an injury of some kind, it will certainly increase any pain and discomfort.

And while no single factor can overcome the other, the care and maintenance of the spine involves a combination of efforts in many areas. If you have a disease or congenital condition, it would be advisable to maintain an exercise program and posture habits to help offset any increase in difficulties later in life. In that regard, healthy practices and overall maintenance of well-being may very well help to offset the discomfort of any potential back pain in the future.

Infrared light therapy, also called low-level light therapy and cold laser light therapy, uses a focused beam of high energy with low heat to promote healing and alleviate pain. Traditionally, this type of therapy is found in the offices of pain-relief practitioners like chiropractors.

Cold laser light therapy promotes healing by stimulating the cells in an effected area causing them to speed healing through increased circulation and energy. Supporters of infrared light therapy claim that the process has the power to build new cells around areas where cells have died.

The laser only penetrates to a level of approximately 2 or 3 inches into the skin, making this modality an excellent choice for conditions like arthritis, or neck pain from muscle spasm. Because the laser does not penetrate deeper, and will not permeate bone, the treatment has little effect on deep tissue injuries or spinal injuries involving disc degeneration.

Studies regarding the effectiveness of low-level light therapy in pain relief have been inconclusive – mixing other modalities in case studies and revealing nothing about the total effectiveness of light therapy alone. However, for the relief of chronic neck and back pain, and in the alternative to surgery, cold laser therapy offers an affordable, viable, and effective solution.

What You Can Expect

Massage therapy has come a long way since the days of massage parlors. This therapeutic approach to holistic healing offers deep rewards for both body and mind, in addition to as yet untapped potential as a full body healing modality.

Still, many patients can become apprehensive before their first relaxation massage appointment and would like to have information regarding the procedures and process that occurs when you visit a massage therapist for a full body relaxation massage.

These massage procedures may be prescribed by your family physician in response to any stress you may be going through in your life, including but not limited to bodily aches and pains, muscle aches and pains, general stress and unrest, and even insomnia and anxiety.

Your first visit to your massage therapist will include a brief discussion about your symptoms and pains, as well as a course of treatment plan that may or may not involve other therapies or healing modalities for you to take part in.

A full body massage will cover your entire body starting with the back, upper back, lower back, sides and spine; backs of legs, down to each foot before moving to the next leg; shoulders, front and back, neck and scalp; face, forehead to chin; arms and hands one after the other moving down from the top of the arm to the palms, finishing with a wrist and hand massage.

You will then turn over and the front of your body will be massaged beginning with the ribcage and sides of the body; abdominal massage starting from the belly up to the neck; front of the legs, one leg at a time from the bottom to the top then back to the front of each foot in turn.

A good full body massage will not only relax you and eliminate body aches and pains, but will also help your body to release toxins.

I’ve been going to Dr. Estner for over 9 years. I first went to see him with a pinched sciatic nerve while training for a marathon. With his help, I was able to continue training and complete my marathon. I’ve been going back ever since and have completed another 6. He realigns my back and hips about ever 4 to 5 weeks. This helps keep me on the roads and running strong. I’ve sent several runners to him and he has helped them all. Dr. Estner is one of the best chiropractors around. He is always up to date on any new techniques and studies that are being done , he has very flexible hours ( with 2 different locations) and is just a wonderful doctor. When you have migraines the first thing you want is a doctor who will give you a pill to get rid of the pain. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT over and over. From one neurologist to another, from pills to MRI’s, I got some relief but it didn’t last.

Doctor Estner came along via a wellness seminar. I was frightened the first few time he adjusted my neck and back. Now I see him every three weeks for maintenance of the migraines (my choice by the way). I no longer carry migraine meds with me everywhere I go. I am amazed by the techniques used and the relief I receive with every visit.

Obviously I still get migraines and take medication. The chiropractic visits have helped reduce the migraines from two to three times a week to two times a month. For me, that’s a blessing.

Thanks Doc.
