Dr. Stepen M. Estner - Chiropractor

As anyone who has ever sustained a back injury can attest to, the pain is life changing and debilitating. Things that used to be simple to do become unbearably impossible to manage. Whether your pain stems from injury, misuse, or simple back stiffness, before you make medication your long-term solution, schedule a visit with a local chiropractor who can give you a complete evaluation, including whether they will be able to help you manage the pain naturally with some chiropractic adjustments and basic, simply, exercises. In the interim, here are three ways to manage your back pain until your appointment.

1. Take a mild, over-the-counter medication that will give you relief from the less severe pain, and possible bring any severe pain into a manageable area while you wait for your office visit with the doctor.

2. Think about the activities or incident that caused the pain to begin. In the case of an accident, this may be easily pin-pointed. However, if the pain is something that has steadily grown, it could be anything – poor posture, weight gain, heavy lifting, or basic stiffness from any number of causes. Isolating and identifying the reason for the pain is another way to help eliminate or alleviate it. If you can determine the cause, changing your lifestyle or activities will provide relief from the pain.

3.  Try holistic and natural, homeopathic cures. Many doctors, chiropractors included, support mild exercise at any age as a way to control weight and eliminate many of the body’s joint and spinal pain.

While it has been widely recognized that back pain will cause numerous issues throughout the body, a recent study by Murdoch University highlights a correlation between spinal discomfort and overall ability to maintain balance and equilibrium.

The research shows that neck, low-back, and mid-back pain can cause significant postural sway in the body, with more sway visible as the pain intensifies, and lessens as pain decreases. The reason for this, the study found, is that the body’s nervous system is able to very quickly adapt to changes in pain levels and bring the body back into equilibrium.

The study is significant in that it gives a better understanding from a clinical standpoint of the recuperative effect that back pain reduction can have for a patient. In addition, the study also sheds light on the importance of reducing pain in elderly patients in particular, since postural sway and imbalance can cause falls, some of which can be fatal.

One of the best ways to find a chiropractor, is to have a referral. If you have been involved in a car accident, your attorney will be able to refer you to a personal injury chiropractor that they know and trust. Whether your attorney has a chiropractor referral or not, you always have the option of treating with your chiropractor of choice.

Choosing a chiropractor can be as simple as performing a search in the phone book or online, or as complex as researching chiropractor reviews on websites like Yelp or Foursquare. Your friends may know of a great chiropractor, and yet, their services may not be exactly what you need for your particular problem or injury.

The first important factor you need to consider is whether the chiropractor offers the kind of treatment and services that will promote healing and overall health. Second, consider whether they are willing to perform an in depth examination prior to beginning your treatment. Third, discover what kinds of procedures are in place for keeping track of your progress as you heal. Fourth, inquire as to whether your chiropractor will use x-ray examinations to locate and identify your injuries. And finally, visit your local state board for chiropractors to see if there have been any professional complaints made prior to making your appointment.

Following these basic guidelines will certainly ensure that you receive the best possible chiropractic care. If you have been injured in an automobile accident in RI and would like to consult with an experienced, well-known, respected local chiropractor, contact Estner Chiropractic at (401) 275-2225 or by email at drestner@verizon.net

Perhaps it is a little known fact, but as a holistic form of medicine that does not use prescription medication to treat patients, chiropractic care is completely safe for all ages. In particular this approach offers an alternative to treating common ailments in children with costly and sometimes dangerous drugs. The article below highlights some of the positive impact this trend is having on parents and the chiropractic community.

Parents Turn To Chiropractors To Treat Colic, Reflux
by Jaclyn Allen

Some parents are turning to chiropractors to treat their infants and children for ailments ranging from colic to earaches.

When Alisha Bauer’s daughter, Avery, was suffering from severe reflux, Bauer said she didn’t get the answers she wanted from doctors.

“Avery had been spitting up a lot,” said Bauer. “It was to the point that we even wondered if she was getting enough to eat. They just kept saying, ‘She’ll grow out of it. It’s fine.’ And I’m like, ‘No. It isn’t.”

So Bauer’s mother suggested that she try a chiropractor.

Avery was 5-months-old when she got her first adjustment.

Chiropractors we talked to said they are seeing more parents like Bauer looking for help with everything from reflux to colic to earaches.

“Chiropractic is not a treatment for disease,” said Dr. Kristina Ring with Botha Chiropractic in Denver. “However, when the baby’s body begins to function better, we do see improvements in those.”

Ring has checked out children for seven years, but lately, she said, pediatricians have even started referring patients.

She said the treatment is nothing like the back-cracking, bone-popping image people might have of chiropractic care.

“The amount of pressure to adjust an infant spine is about the same amount as on a ripe tomato without piercing the skin. It’s very, very gentle,” said Ring.

She said it is effective, though, and pointed to a 2009 study funded by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association of hundreds of children in chiropractic care.

“They found the only adverse affect was mild discomfort,” said Ring. “The majority of doctors and parents reported the kids were sleeping better, better behavior and improved immune function.”

However, many doctors are still wary.

“I think with infants there is particular reason to be cautious,” said Dr. Steve Federico, president of the Colorado chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. “There’s very little research that has been done with infants relative to chiropractors.”

He said, in general, children under 2 years of age are particularly at risk of injury, and that if he had an infant, he would not take the child to a chiropractor.

“I think that I would be concerned about the lack of evidence to support the care for pediatric patients in this area,” said Federico.

But parents such as Bauer said as long as chiropractic care seems to work when mainstream medicine falls short they believe opinions about it will continue to “adjust.”

“This week, I’ve seen a significant improvement,” said Bauer. “So many kids are medicated that don’t need to be, so it’s great to be able to think about other options.”

Other than an auto accident, work injury or sports injury, there are several other ways that back injury and back pain can occur. According to WebMD being overweight is one currently widespread precursor to chronic back pain.

The overweight body needs to work much harder in all areas to maintain erect posture and spinal health, with added weight putting an unnecessary strain on the spine and back muscles. This one factor alone can cause untold levels of neck and back pain, however is not the sole reason or source for back pain.

Some other ways that back pain may be created or aggravated include:

High heel shoes
Poor posture habits
An old or low quality mattress
Congenital conditions that involve the spine
Old age
Injury

The combinations of some of these factors are more demanding than others. For instance, if you are approaching old age and have always had poor posture habits, you will be much more likely to experience back pain as you age. Likewise, if you were born with or developed a disease of the spine and then endured an injury of some kind, it will certainly increase any pain and discomfort.

And while no single factor can overcome the other, the care and maintenance of the spine involves a combination of efforts in many areas. If you have a disease or congenital condition, it would be advisable to maintain an exercise program and posture habits to help offset any increase in difficulties later in life. In that regard, healthy practices and overall maintenance of well-being may very well help to offset the discomfort of any potential back pain in the future.

Dr. Pezza is a great chiropractor. I will recommend him to anyone that I know. Thank you very much.”

When isn’t it a good time to visit a RI chiropractor? Although one of the most common times to visit a chiropractor is after a car accident or injury at work, chiropractic medicine offers more than just pain relief and treatment for traumatic sports and personal injuries, chronic back and neck pain, and other spinal injuries.

Because chiropractic uses an holistic approach to medicine and is a whole body healing practice, you may visit your chiropractor at any time for adjustments and spinal alignments to keep your entire body healthy, strong, and injury free.

Chiropractors have been known to treat such ailments as allergies, administer to sports injuries, workplace injuries, prenatal back pain, pediatric spinal injuries and maintenance, headaches, joint discomfort, circulation issues, and others, to name but a few. Regular visits to your chiropractor will keep you free of many of the most common illnesses and allergies related to seasonal situations.

In addition to maintenance and care of the whole body and spine during periods of peak health, your chiropractor can offer you pain relief from back and neck discomfort during pregnancy or after an injury, and they are particularly well known for alleviating all kinds of pain in the body including but not limited to headaches, spinal pain, and joint pain and discomfort. Because chiropractors do not prescribe drugs for the treatment of pain, they are the perfect solution for children as well.

Infrared light therapy, also called low-level light therapy and cold laser light therapy, uses a focused beam of high energy with low heat to promote healing and alleviate pain. Traditionally, this type of therapy is found in the offices of pain-relief practitioners like chiropractors.

Cold laser light therapy promotes healing by stimulating the cells in an effected area causing them to speed healing through increased circulation and energy. Supporters of infrared light therapy claim that the process has the power to build new cells around areas where cells have died.

The laser only penetrates to a level of approximately 2 or 3 inches into the skin, making this modality an excellent choice for conditions like arthritis, or neck pain from muscle spasm. Because the laser does not penetrate deeper, and will not permeate bone, the treatment has little effect on deep tissue injuries or spinal injuries involving disc degeneration.

Studies regarding the effectiveness of low-level light therapy in pain relief have been inconclusive – mixing other modalities in case studies and revealing nothing about the total effectiveness of light therapy alone. However, for the relief of chronic neck and back pain, and in the alternative to surgery, cold laser therapy offers an affordable, viable, and effective solution.
